AVAILABLE ONLINE OR ON-CAMPUS

COSC 120, Introduction to Cyberspace is a practical, hands-on introduction to the use of the Internet and Web page development that is completely self-contained and has no prerequisites, although COSC 100 is a valuable background.  The 3 credit course, part of the standard curriculum of the University, may be taken on campus or online.  The Web based course has been designed, from its inception in 1995, as one which an independent learner could study outside the framework of the on-campus course.  It was offered exclusively as a Web based course for the first time during the Spring, 2000 and will continue to be available, from now on, online every semester . By completing the course you will

  1. be familiar with all Internet services of cyberspace, e.g.
    1. the World Wide Web
    2. e-mail and chat
    3. teleconferencing
    4. file transfer (FTP)
    5. forum, newsgroups, and mailing lists
    6. other Internet services like Telnet
  2. be able to develop a Web site
  3. have an impressive FSU Web site that is dedicated to resources on your major
From the learning modules you will learn the vocabulary and concepts of cyberspace in general and the Internet in particular (with the main emphasis on the World Wide Web).  From the lab exercises you will learn how to use all the various Internet services, but the main focus is on the Web.  You will learn how to efficiently search for information on the Web and you will learn how to develop a basic Web site using an HTML editor.  If you complete the course, you can expect to be able to expand your knowledge of cyberspace and extend your skill at Web site development --- on your own! In other words, completion of this course will open many interesting doors  beyond which you can explore, as a well founded independent learner. If you are interested in pursuing college credit in Web development, COSC 120, is the prerequisite to COSC 330, Web Developmentthe pair will be part of an interesting Computer Science Minor that focuses on the Internet.
