COSC330 PROJECT
OPTION
FROSTBURG EVILLAGE
by Andy Reynolds
With the cooperation of the Computer Club & SGA, we have a student
Web server that hosts several Web sites. The site that we are concerned
with for this project is located at www.frostburg.org,
and is called the Frostburg eVillage. The idea for this alternative
of the COSC 330 project is that students will create Web
sites for the local businesses or organizations of
Frostburg, and the surrounding area. Through creating these Web sites,
students will gain experience with creating an "official" Web site for
a Frostburg organization, working one on one with its representative, and
publishing a Web site for long term use. There are two options:
-
Create a new Web site for a business or organization in the Frostburg
area. You should solicit the participation of a local business, church,
organization, etc. from the Frostburg area. Confirm that a web site has
not already been created for this business/organization by checking with
the administrator of the Frostburg eVillage - goliath@frostburg.edu.
You will then research the business/organization and create a complete
web site that will give a user browsing this site a complete understanding
of what this business/organization is, their location, contact information,
and any other important information that may help site visitor.
-
Update an existing Frostburg eVillage web site. Several
Web sites have already been created for local businesses,
community organizations, or recreational facilities. However, these
sites were created over three years ago. These sites may have obsolete
information, and some sites are no longer working properly; some of these
sites could use a different design. Your assignment would be to select
one of these businesses/organizations, contact the owner or leader (just
as you would if you were creating a new Web site), and update the existing
site. Because you already have a preexisting Web site, you
will be expected to incorporate some advanced feature into the new site
and compare the two sites, i.e. you should have links to
the "before" and "after" Web sites. (The new site will supersede
the old site on www.frostburg.org.)
See below for advanced features.
Some things you may want to include in the web site are:
-
A description of the function or purpose of the business/organization
-
A history and planned future developments of the business/organization
-
Pictures of the inside & outside of the location
-
Addresses and Telephone numbers
-
Hours of operation
-
Updateable schedule of activities
-
Menu, Product List, Price List, etc.
All of these eVillage Web sites must fulfill the requirements
of the Semester Project, especially the advanced
features covered in COSC 330. The Student Server is capable
of advanced programming options such as:
-
ASP
-
PHP
-
CGI-Perl
-
Microsoft Access Database
-
MySQL Database
-
Server Side Includes
With this in mind, you can add options to make the web site dynamic such
as random banners, page counters, contact forms, online questionnaires,
online forms of any type, etc.
If you would like to use one of these options for your project, please
notify Tony (who has a couple of suggested contacts, "first come first
served") and contact Andy Reynolds at goliath@frostburg.edu
for more information.
