"I love mathematics not only for its
technical applications, but principally because it is beautiful;
because humanity has breathed its spirit of play into it, and because
it has given humanity our greatest game - the encompassing of the
infinite." |
The Center for Mathematics—for 5th through 8th graders—is located in the beautiful mountains of Western Maryland at Frostburg State University, Frostburg MD. As you work alongside mathematicians, teachers, and new friends, you will learn how to think more like a mathematician. Some of the ways of thinking you will strengthen through activities at the Center will help you learn in any field of study, and even in daily life situations:
- Persistence
- Seeking and reconciling multiple perspectives
- Stumbling into an adventuresome unknown
- Facing stubborn difficulties
- Strategies to simplify what's complex
- Strategies to deepen what's simple
- Drawing insight from distantly related realities
- Cycling back and forth, like a pendulum, between intuitive approximate thought and precise detailed understanding
- Communicating
Content will be adjusted based on participants' previous experience, and may include:
- Fibonacci numbers and the Golden Quotient
- Infinity
- Pi
- Triangular numbers
- Pascal's triangle and pyramid
- Speed tools for math facts and computation
- Geometric curiosities
- Fractals
- Prime numbers
