Welcome to . . . The Maryland Summer Center for Mathematics: Mystery + Mastery * Beauty + Power = Infinity ! at Frostburg State University. Our team of 6 dedicated teachers is working hard to prepare for You an exciting week of math explorations and challenges that let You feel the thrills of seeing new patterns and surprising connections between ideas! Mathematics is a world of exploration, with new ideas being discovered & invented every day! In fact, just in the last month a new biggest prime number was discovered: 2 raised to the 25,964,951 power - 1has almost 8 million digits - it would need a 4000 page paperback book that's more than 8 inches thick! I can't wait to meet You in July and explore with You!! |

I'm really excited that we'll be together this summer to behold the beauty, mind the mystery, perceive the power, and gain some mastery of mathematics! The more I've studied math, the more amazed I've become at its nature – it's a language, an art, a science, and it has connections to things we see, and hear, and use every day. Together, at the Summer Center for Mathematics, we'll explore this infinitely awesome subject of mathematics!

| I have been a member of the Department of Mathematics at Frostburg State University since 1998. The thing that I love most about my job is learning. Not only do I enjoy learning mathematics, I am also fascinated by the various ways students attempt to understand and reconcile mathematics. Recently I have been studying prospective teachers’ content knowledge and content-specific attitudes towards various problem-solving methodologies. | ||

Welcome to MSC! I'm looking forward to working with all of the participating students this summer. I'm sure we'll have a great time exploring the mysteries of mathematics together. I have been a teacher at Washington Middle School for 11 years love working with students of that age. For fun, check out one of my favorite websites www.matti.usu.edu. Click on Virtual Library, then choose a topic you enjoy. My favorite is Mastermind! Try it!

Welcome to Ms. Teresa Vogtman, a new instructor for 2006! |

Welcome to the Maryland Summer Center website! I'm a professor at Southern Connecticut State University, but I'm glad to be part of the Maryland Summer Center even if it does mean driving 405 miles to be there! I'm really interested in the colorful mathematical pictures called fractals, which mathematicians are still trying to understand better. Click here to see pictures made by some of my students. The "Fractal Microscope" is one nice way to explore a famous fractal called the Mandelbrot Set. I'm excited about our Maryland Summer Center for Mathematics, and can't wait to teach you some things about fractals! |
